چکیده

I . Weanling rats were fed on an iron-deficient diet without added folic acid and litter-mate controls received the same diet supplemented with Fe. Groups of deficient and control animals were killed at intervals of up to 88 days and glutamate formiminotransferase activity in liver and folic acid activity in liver and serum were measured. 2. No differences were found between the results from the deficient and control animals, although the deficient diet produced marked falls in haemoglobin, packed cell volume and serum iron. 3. In a second experiment folic acid was added to the diets and twelve rats received the Fe-deficient diet and their litter-mates were fed on the Fe-supplemented diet for 91 clays. No differences were found in the activity of glutamate formiminotransferase purified from the combined livers of the two groups.

The Kinetics of Iron Metabolism in Swine with Various Experimentally Induced Anemias

Ferrokinetic studies were performed on 3 swine given phenylhydrazine, 3 swine deficient in pyridoxine, and 3 swine deficient in pteroylglutamic acid. Body surface radioactivity was measured in 2 pteroylglutamic acid-deficient animals. In the animals given phenylhydrazine, the mean erythrocyte survival time was 5 days. The plasma iron turnover rate was increased about fourfold, and the rate of e...

Effects of Subacute Administration of Co-Trimoxazole and Folic Acid on Ovarian Tissue in Adult Female Rats

Background: Previous studies have reported the antifertility activities of sulfonamides. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of co-trimoxazole and its co-administration with folic acid on ovarian tissue in female rats. Methods: A total of 54 rats were randomly divided into 9 groups (n=6). Group I served as the control and group II (vehicle) received saline. Other groups, III to IX, r...

OWEN, CHARLES A., JR. Effects of iron on copper metabolism and copper on iron metabolism in rats. Am. J. Physiol. 224(3): 514-518. 1973.-Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed whole-milk powder (Cu ,Fe deficient), milk powder plus Cu in the drinking water (Fe deficient), or milk powder plus iron in the drinking water (Cu deficient). Studies with 67Cu were carried out for the most part after the rats...

Dietary iron-deficient anemia induces a variety of metabolic changes and even apoptosis in rat liver: a DNA microarray study.

Anemia can be induced by dietary iron deficiency, as well as by hemorrhagia. It may also be associated with changes in lipid metabolism. However, no global analysis detailing the consequences of iron deficiency in the liver has yet been conducted. Since the liver is a metabolically important organ and also a major iron-storing organ, we performed a comprehensive transcriptome analysis to determ...

Relationships between Biotin and Vitamin B12. Effects of Biotin and Vitamin B12 on Folic Acid Metabolism.

1. The effects of dietary biotin compared with vitamin B(12) on the total content and on the distribution of the various folate derivatives in the liver of rats given a biotin-free diet have been studied. The effect of both vitamins on the conversion in vitro of folic acid into citrovorum factor in the same experimental conditions was also examined. 2. In biotin-treated rats as well as in vitam...
